Craps is one of the most exciting gambling games you will find in the casino. It is filled with incredible winning streaks, twists and turns and big wins. And it literally all comes down to one roll of the dice.

One of the popular images when you think of a casino game is the dice bouncing around the craps table while a crowd of people gather around waiting to see the outcome. Many people have this picture sealed in their head, but they don’t really know exactly how this game is played.

How to Play Craps in a Physical Casino?

When you play craps in a physical casino, you can be an active participant and take turns rolling the dice with the other players at the table. But you can also be a passive participant, simply betting on what is happening. In both cases, however, you need to understand how the game works.

To understand all the details of how to play craps, you have to learn the different bets. But for now, just know that you’ll need to place your chips on the table in a specific spot that indicates the different bets.

Also, you need to know which bets you can make at different times because some are only available in some situations and depending on what has already happened at the table.

This is the basic structure for a round of craps:

It is played with two dice in a circle, clockwise, with a maximum of 20 players at one table.

  1. After all bets have been placed, the first roll for the round follows. It is called “come out roll”. The player rolls the dice on the table, and the sum of those two dice will determine what happens next.
  2. If a 7 or 11 is rolled, it is a winning exit roll and the round ends. Then the next roll will also be out, with the same player rolling the dice again. If a combination of 2, 3 or 12 is obtained, then the round also ends. But this is usually considered a negative result, at least for the players who bet on it because they will also lose their turn when this happens.
  3. Any other result means the round continues and the “off” chip will be replaced by an “on” chip to indicate that a second phase called a “Point” has been set.
  4. The number that was produced in the previous “coming out” phase now becomes the target of this next phase, or simply the “point”. At this point, the player will try to roll that number again before rolling a 7.
  5. The “shooter” continues to roll the dice until they get either the number that is already the point or the number 7. If they manage to make “their point” by rolling that number before rolling a 7, they get the chance to be the “shooter” ” again and start again from the first phase “exit”.
  6. But if they roll a 7 before hitting the number from the dot, they give the dice to the next shooter for the next roll.
  7. Note that the round will continue and the “on” chip remains in place until a point is rolled or 7.
  8. When the point number is hit, we go back to step 1 to start the same process again.

How to Play Craps in an Online Casino

The step-by-step guide we showed above for playing craps in a land-based casino also applies when you play online, at least when it comes to the gameplay itself. Again, you’ll have an exit phase, a point phase, and everything else we mentioned above. What’s different is how you make it all happen – from your bets to your roll.

In most Craps games in online casinos, you will see a simulation of the dice table on the screen containing all the typical symbols such as an on/off chip and two virtual dice just waiting for you to roll them.

You’ll also see the bankroll you should use (which you’ll choose by withdrawing money from your account at the start of the game), along with a series of chips of different values. Finally, you will notice a button that you can click to roll the dice.

What are the steps to play craps online?

  1. Click on the chips you want to use to make your bet. Then click on the part of the board where you want to place the bet. One of the positives about playing craps online is that the game will prevent you from making illegal bets.
  2. Click the “roll” button to roll the dice. They will bounce across the screen and land on the table, showing you the total.
  3. You can continue betting between rolls as long as it is allowed. When you make a roll that allows you to win one or more of your bets, you’ll see an animation of chips quickly moving across the table and notice your bankroll rising. Some online platforms include a box labeled “win” that shows you how much you’ve won on that particular game.
  4. If you lose after the roll, the chips you placed will be swept off the screen as if there is an attendant next to the virtual table.
  5. Another button you’ll probably notice is called “clear”. It will help you eliminate any bets you made by mistake or if you changed your mind before making your next roll.
  6. Continue playing. You can do this as long as you have money in your bankroll. If you have depleted your supply, you will need to refill it to continue.

After playing the online game for a while, the process of clicking on different bets will become natural and you won’t even need to think about it. If you play on a device that has a touch screen (tablet, smartphone), you will see the same layout, only you will use your fingers to make the different bets.

Different Types of Bets in Craps

You already know how Craps works in terms of the basic rhythm of the game. You also know how to play in a physical casino or online. It’s time to learn the different bets you can make. And find out when you can do them and most of all how to earn them of course.

It is important to pay attention to where each bet goes. Also, in some cases there are rules regarding the amount of certain bets you can place.

Pass Bet

The pass bet is the basic and most common of all bets in the game of dice. You bet on the ‘shooter’ to succeed, and if he does, you win the bet. These bets are paid at even, meaning that if you bet $10 and win, you will get back your $10 bet together plus $10 from the casino (or online platform).

If the shooter rolls a 7 or 11 on the exit roll, pass bets win. If a 2, 3 or 12 is rolled, pass bets lose.

Any other roll leads to phase 2 – setting a point. If the player then rolls the point on each subsequent roll before rolling a 7, pass bets win. However, if a 7 is rolled before the point is rolled again, they lose.

Where to make a Pass Bet

Around the edge of the dice table is a line labeled “Pass Line.” Pass bets are placed there.

When to make your Pass Bet

This bet must be made before the outgoing roll. You’ll know when it’s OK when you see a black chip with the word “off” on the table. If this chip is turned “on” and placed next to a number on the table, this means that a point has been established and pass bets are no longer available to you.

Don’t Pass Bet

This is basically a bet against the shooter. It’s a good idea to think before making this bet in a live casino, as it’s generally considered a form of bad etiquette to hope someone rolling the dice loses. If you play online, you can make don’t pass bets without having to worry about anything like that. In the case of such a bet, you hope that the shooter loses. If the shooter wins, you lose. The odds are no different than what you get on a pass bet as it is simply the reverse bet.

Where to make a Don’t Pass bet

Just above the Pass bet line, you will see a section with the words “Don’t Pass Line”. This is where you can make that bet.

When to make a Don’t Pass bet

You can only make this bet in the first “come-out” phase of the game. Look for the “off” chip. If you see the chip “on” instead, you will have to wait.

Come Bet

This bet can be placed on rolls that are not out. In other words, these are basically bets made when the point has already been established and either it or the 7 is rolled to start all over again.

When you make a come bet, the next roll becomes your outgoing. The rules for what happens next are the same as with the pass bet. You win or lose under the same set of circumstances.

This bet basically allows you to act between the outgoing rolls. The odds are no different than what you would get for a Pass bet. It is possible to place multiple bets and have them all settled while the pass or don’t pass bets remain in play.

Where to place a come bet

You will see on each side of the table a rectangle with the word “Come”. This is where that bet is placed.

When to make a come bet

You can only make this bet outside the exit phase. You will see a white “on” chip near where the pass or no pass point for bets is set. There really is no point in betting on a previous exit as it would essentially be a pass bet and therefore redundant.

Don’t Come Bet

Here’s another bet where you’ll be calling yourself against the shooter. However, since this bet probably won’t involve as many people at the table, you probably won’t be looked at as badly at the casino than if you made a Don’t Pass bet. If you’re playing online, again, there’s nothing to worry about.

The Don’t Come bet is like the equivalent of the don’t pass bet, and does the opposite of the come bet. You’ll bet on a no-go bet and hope the shooter losses.

In other words, if you make a “don’t come” bet, you’ll be hoping that the first roll after betting is a 2,3 or 12, not a 7 or 11. Also, you’ll be hoping that once the point settles in within that round, the shooter rolls  a 7 before the new point.

Where to place a don’t come bet

You will see the Don’t Come box placed just above the Come bet slot on the table.

When to make a don’t come bet

Like the reverse come bet, you must wait until the non-exit roll. Like the come bet, however, the come-out roll bet can actually affect your don’t come bet.

Odd Bets

Many people choose these bets, often called free odds, as evidence that this is a worthwhile game for bettors. The reason is that odd bets are rare, and with them you have just as much chance of winning as the house. In other words, your rate of return on these bets in the long run is about 100%.

The catch is that this bet can only be in addition to an already made one, such as pass or don’t pass. Basically, this way you add more money to your initial bet. As a result, you can increase your winnings even more if your initial bet was correct of course. It is good to know that the odd bet will have a payout based on which number is established as the point.

Taking or Laying the Odd Bet

If you bet on the shooter succeeding with an odd bet, this is known as a ‘taking the odd’ bet. But you can also support a bet against the shooter, for example a don’t pass bet, this is called laying the odd bet. Since your chances are statistically better to win with a leave bet than a call, your return will be better if you make a leave bet.

Where to place an odd bet

If you are going to make a ‘take’ bet, look for the thin line just below the pass bet bar. Likewise, the don’t pass bar has a small space below which is for ‘leaving’ an odd bet.

When to make an odd bet

You can make such a bet only after establishing the point.

Odd bet limits

Because these bets are profitable for players, many casinos and online platforms often place a limit on their size. This limit usually comes in the form of a multiplier of your original pass or don’t pass bet. You will find different restrictions depending on the casino or online site.

Place Bet

We have already established that the only possible points in the game of Craps are 4,5,6,8,9 and 10. A 2, 3, 7, 11 or 12 on the outgoing roll ends the round and leads to a new one. With place bets, you can play the point numbers without placing pass or don’t pass bets first.

The goal with this bet is to hit the number before a 7 is rolled. If that happens, you win.

Place to Lose Bet

This bet is reversed to the place bet. You pick one of the numbers we mentioned above, hope that the 7 appears before the number you pick.

With this bet, your odds are better than with regular place bets. As a result, the returns from them are not that high.

Where to make Place to Lose

At the top of the dice table you will see large blocks for the numbers 4, 5, 6, 8, 9 and 10. To place a bet on one of these numbers, your chip will go into the small box below the number. The bet is placed in a space above the number.

When to make a place to lose b et

You can place these bets at any time except in phase one. And you don’t need to have made another bet before.

Buy Bet

With the buy bet, you pay a small commission on your bet and receive the so-called fair odds. Your payout is based exactly on your chances of winning. The buy bet works exactly the same as the place bet.

Hardway Bet

The Hardway bet is the only table bet that relies not only on the total number of the two dice, but also on the specific numbers of each of them. A hardway roll is one in which an even number is achieved with two dice of the same value. For example:

2 + 2 = 4

Hardway bets can only be made after the “out” roll. In other words, if your bet is not yet settled and an exit roll occurs, your bet will be inactive until a point is set.

Where to make a Hardaway bet

You will see dice symbols for hardware bets in the middle of the table.

When to make a Hardaway bet

You can place Hardaway bets on after the roll is released. As we said above, they will remain inactive until a point is set.

Field Bet

With a filed bet, you bet that 2, 3, 4, 9, 10, 11 or 12 will come up on the next roll. It’s not complicated at all. If you win, you get even money.

The field bet is good for beginners because it is extremely easy to understand. You simply bet on what number will come up on a single roll of the dice. Everything else that happens in the game is irrelevant.

Where to place a field bet

Usually the field bet is located just below the come bet.

When to place a field bet

You can place a field bet at any time.

One-Roll Bet

These bets are simple enough to understand how they work without an in-depth explanation. Again, when you make these bets, it doesn’t matter what else is going on at the table. You’re just trying to guess the outcome of the next roll.

Final Words

Craps can be a little intimidating because this isn’t a game that’s easy for beginners. But many of the complex elements become easy to understand when you play for a while.

Once you start playing, you will find that it is quite an exciting experience and brings quite good returns. This is a combination that any gambler would enjoy. With a little practice, you’ll be a regular and successful player at the craps table in no time.
